1,000th DAF technician receives his Irtec licence

Over 1,000 truck technicians working in 136 DAF dealerships across the UK have now been accredited under the irtec scheme of skill assessment and licensing.
The DAF Dealer Service Panel agreed last April that the independent irtec licensing scheme should form an integral part of its service quality improvement strategy centred on DAFcheck, DAF’s purpose built truck maintenance record system.
Since then it has invested heavily in putting technicians through the two stage accreditation process and currently around 70 per cent of technicians employed across the network have received their licences. With an aim to achieve 100 per cent coverage and over 1,000 technicians already licensed, DAF is established as the clear leader amongst truck manufacturers in the UK in the introduction of this national accreditation scheme.
DAFcheck provides operators with an easily accessible and paper-less record system to assist them in maintaining a low ‘green category’ score under the roadworthiness part of the Vosa OCRS scheme. The system can cover all marques of truck making it particularly attractive to operators of mixed fleets.
DAF technicians carrying out a safety check on a vehicle can now add their unique irtec license number when signing-off an inspection report. This gives customers confidence that the work has been carried out by a fully trained technician and it also provides traceability back to an individual should a query arise subsequently.
To earn their five year irtec licence each technician must go through a two stage assessment. This starts with a theory and on-line test to probe their knowledge of the regulations covering safety inspection criteria and standards and which is normally undertaken at an IMI run test centre. For trainee technicians on the DAF National Dealer Apprentice Training Programme this theory test now forms part of their final block of training at Bristol College.
The second part involves a practical assessment of the individual’s skills. In the case of DAF technicians this is carried out in the workplace by an assessor from the FTA. It starts with a face-to-face interview to check the technician’s qualifications and experience and concludes with an observation of a test being carried out.
Phil Clayton of Ford & Slater, who is Chairman of the DAF Dealer Service Panel, says: “I believe that the introduction of irtec accreditation is a major move forward for all: technicians, dealers and in particular customers. The independent endorsement from a recognised industry body is extremely important to us as we pursue further improvements to our already creditable Vosa first-time pass rate.
“With the ever increasing focus on OCRS, I believe that DAFcheck – which now incorporates a robust quality check process - coupled with irtec technician licensing, gives every truck operator the best opportunity to protect their O-license.”
